Kendrick Lamar opened up the 2018 Grammy Awards with a thrilling and politically charged medley featuring U2 and spoken interludes from Dave Chapelle. The performance opened with dancers, dressed as soldiers, stomping in unison as the American flag waved in the backdrop. Lamar is then seen in the middle of the group reciting lyrics from “XXX.” Everything else that took place was artistic perfection. From Bono and the Edge joining K-Dot on stage, to Chapelle’s bold commentary in between songs.

“Hi, I’m Dave Chapelle. And I just wanted to remind the audience that the only thing more frightening than watching a black man be honest in America is being an honest Black man in America. Sorry for the interruption.”

Lamar then continued his onslaught of verses from singles like “DNA,” and Jay Rock’s “King’s Dead.” Which all led up to a chilling ending as simulated gunshots blasted through the speakers while dancers fell to the ground. Watch below.
