The NBA season is right around the corner and to kick things off, Sprite has recruited LeBron James for their #WannaSprite ad campaign. For the first TV commercial, LeBron is joined by rapper, Lil Yachty.

Let’s get one thing straight. I’d never tell you to drink Sprite, even if I was in a commercial for Sprite, which I am, or you were watching it, which you are. I wouldn’t tell you to drink it no matter what that cue card says,” says Lebron, as the camera pans to the camera crew on set. Throughout the 60-second TV spot, Bron is seen in different scenarios, talking us through why he “wouldn’t tell you to drink Sprite.” In one of these scenarios, the All-Star Cavalier is joined by Lil Yachty: “Even if this were a metaphor about Sprite and I was talking about Sprite and Lil Yachty here was paid by Sprite to write lyrics about Sprite, I still wouldn’t tell you to drink Sprite.”

Yachty is seen sitting at a piano singing, “Cold like it’s a Sprite soda” – a twist on his “cold like Minnesota” song off his “Lil Boat The Mixtape” project.

By fusing sports and Hip Hop, Sprite wins with this first commercial in their newly launched campaign. We are curious to see what else they have up their sleeves as we enter Q4 and the holiday season. The brand has a long history of incorporating pop culture into their branding; especially Hip Hop. If you recall, in 2010, Sprite featured Drake in an ad and last year, they featured Hip Hop lyrics from Drake, Biggie, Nas and Rakim on their cans for their “Obey Your Verse” campaign.

Genius. Seriously.
