My older brother put me onto Hip Hop as a young kid. From Wutang Clan, to Nas, to Tupac, the Beastie Boys, and more, I was fortunate to have been exposed to the genre and culture early on. So of course, when my brother started listening to Eminem, I was intrigued. Who was this white guy rapping all crazy?
Well, it took me a minute to get acclimated to his style of rap, but I was instantaneously hooked when Marshall Mathers LP dropped. From his versatile delivery, witty punchlines, imaginative storytelling, and vicious wordplay, Eminem was – and still is, simply put, dope af. Well tonight, at the 2017 BET Hip Hop Awards, the Hip Hop heavyweight delivered. I mean, I wouldn’t have expected anything less from him.
Keeping everyone on the edge of their seats, Em came out the gates, at full speed. For about 4-5 minutes, the Detroit rapper spewed venomous rhymes about Donald Trump, while name-dropping Steve Bannon, acknowledging Colin Kaepernick, and more. We needed this from the “white rapper” who’s been holding Hip Hop down since his emergence into the mainstream. We can’t afford the silence of White alliances – especially in Hip Hop, a culture that has always been so vocal.
